M bayonet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
M bayonet of a Leica M3

The M bayonet is a lens connection that the Leica company (or its legal predecessor Leitz) introduced in 1954 for rangefinder cameras .

It has a transfer function of the distance set on the lens to the rangefinder of the camera so that the measuring function of the rangefinder can be used. The back focus is 27.8 mm.

In the latest version, which has been introduced for the Leica M8, markings are also attached to the flange, which can supply optically coded information about the lens type to the camera in order to allow the camera to digitally correct the image. Older lenses can be provided with the markings at a later date by Leica.

In addition to Leica, other companies also offered or offered cameras with this bayonet, such as Konica , Minolta (CL, CLE), Cosina ( Voigtländer ), Rollei , and Carl Zeiss .

These manufacturers also each offered lenses with the M bayonet, so that the selection of corresponding lenses is one of the largest on the market. Other manufacturers were or are u. a. Avenon , Handevision ( Iberit lenses), and MS Optical / MS-Optics.

In camera systems with an even smaller flange focal length and the same or smaller image circle, such as the Micro Four Thirds system or the E-mount system from Sony, lenses with an M bayonet can be used with a suitable lens adapter .
