The Canon EOS M camera housing is the first mirrorless model of the EOS M digital camera system of the same name from the Japanese manufacturer Canon . The system was launched on the market at the end of October 2012. In February 2015 Canon presented a revised successor EOS M3 and in October 2015 another model, the EOS M10 . In September 2016, for the Photokina, the system was expanded with the first model with a viewfinder , the EOS M5 camera housing . The EOS M6 and EOS M100 were added in 2017, followed by the EOS M50 in April 2018 .

technical features

The camera does not have a viewfinder and only works in live view mode. The image sensor has the APS-C format. The image information is from a 18  megapixel large CMOS - image sensor collected and on a 3-inch touchscreen shown. Videos can be recorded in full HD resolution at 25 frames per second. The video snapshot function allows short films of two, four or eight seconds in length.

The camera does not have a built-in flash. Instead, a hot shoe is available for all EX Speedlite - Flashes fit. The master-compatible Speedlite 90EX is already included in the scope of delivery for some kit offers .

The camera is available in a black, white, silver or red housing. The dimensions of the housing are 109 mm × 67 mm × 32 mm. The total weight is around 300 grams.

Lenses

Lenses for the EOS-M have the EF-M bayonet . Seven EF-M bayonet lenses are available from Canon. Five of these are variable focal length lenses , one is a relatively bright wide - angle lens, and one is a wide-angle macro lens . Most lenses are equipped with image stabilization ("IS" = Image Stabilization) which, in contrast to the EOS system, can be controlled and monitored from the camera body.

Fixed focal length lenses:

  • EF-M 22 mm f / 2 STM (corresponds to 35 mm for 35 mm format )
  • EF-M 28 mm f / 3.5 Macro IS STM (corresponds to 45 mm for 35mm format)
  • EF-M 32 mm f / 1.4 STM (corresponds to 51 mm for 35mm format)

Zoom lenses:

  • EF-M 11–22 mm f / 4–5.6 IS STM (corresponds to 18–35 mm for 35mm format)
  • EF-M 15–45 mm f / 3.5–6.3 IS STM (corresponds to 24–72 mm for 35mm format)
  • EF-M 18–55 mm f / 3.5–5.6 IS STM (corresponds to 29–88 mm for 35mm format)
  • EF-M 18–150 mm f / 3.5–6.3 IS STM (corresponds to 29–240 mm for 35mm format)
  • EF-M 55–200 mm f / 4.5–6.3 IS STM (corresponds to 88–320 mm for 35mm format)

EF and EF-S bayonet lenses , including autofocus, can be used with an adapter available from Canon and other manufacturers.

In conjunction with STM system lenses (STM = Stepper Motor Technology = stepper motor technology) the camera the lens set the autofocus speed. This leads to a smoother tracking of the distance setting, especially with video recordings.

review

A hybrid autofocus that is too slow is criticized . This is seen by many as one of the main reasons for the camera's moderate success, as a result of which the price for the package (kit) consisting of standard zoom and flash fell from a list price of € 849 to less than € 400 within six months.

With firmware version 2.0.2, the manufacturer was able to increase the autofocus speed in June 2013.

EOS M2

In December 2013, the manufacturer introduced a further development with the EOS M2 model . It is sold exclusively on the Asian market. The camera was technically only slightly changed, has the same 18-megapixel sensor and also the DIGIC -5 image processor. The model is 24 g (8%) lighter and has a WLAN function.
