Günter Beltzig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Günter Beltzig (* 1941 in Wuppertal ) is a German designer . He became known in the 1960s primarily for a new design of plastic furniture. He has been designing play equipment and adventure areas for children since 1977.

Training and work

Even as a teenager, Günter Beltzig learned to express himself through sketches and drawings. The left-handed and dyslexic was full of ideas and visions. Despite his desire to become an inventor, he initially decided to do an apprenticeship as a machine fitter.

After studying industrial design at the Werkkunstschule Wuppertal (Dipl. Design), he worked in the design department of Siemens AG in Munich from 1966 to 1970 . But between refrigerators and vacuum cleaners, Beltzig could hardly give free rein to his creativity.

In 1966 he founded the plastics company Beltzig Design together with his brothers and developed robust play furniture and equipment, interior fittings and unusual chairs for ten years. At this time, the Beltzig brothers developed joint projects with other well-known designers, such as the German Luigi Colani .

In 1968 Beltzig developed the “Floris” chair, which made the company famous in one fell swoop. Inspired by the upcoming moon landing, the “Floris” art furniture series was created. Financial success did not materialize in the 1970s, but today Beltzig's “Floris” can be found as a classic in the New York Art Museum and in many other European collections. The “Floris” chair has been produced again in a limited edition.

Since 2010 there has been a collaboration with Löffler GmbH in Reichenschwand , Germany. Günter Beltzig is now again intensively involved in the creation of new furniture. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, another design object from the 1970s, the "Pegasus" - a combination of desk and chair, was reissued in limited numbers.

After working as a freelance designer, Günter Beltzig found his place when he started working for various playground equipment companies. Since 1977 he has been advising Richter Spielgeräte GmbH in Frasdorf and developing adventure rather than playgrounds for them, which not only attract the “little ones” with their safety and ergonomics. Beltzig is one of the few who also deals with the conception of handicapped accessible play areas.
