The Bielefeld media archive | Frank-Becker-Stiftung ( abbreviated to MAB ) is an originally privately run sound and film archive in Germany. The founder, namesake of the foundation and collector of the archive material is Frank Becker.

The Frank Becker Foundation is a non-profit organization in the Brackwede district of Bielefeld . The work of the foundation employees is voluntary .

Origin and history

The foundation of the media archive in Bielefeld goes back to Frank Becker's enthusiasm for film . As early as 1975 he ran a school film club during his time at Brackweder Realschule and soon afterwards, after making contact with 20th Century Fox of Germany GmbH , came to his first 16 mm newsreels . These laid the foundation for his private collection. In the following years Becker managed a. a. In addition to his training as an industrial clerk in the graphic arts field, he not only acted as a projectionist himself , but also made important contacts with various figures in the television and film sector. Among these were Horst Rademacher from the "Fox 'Tönenden Wochenschau" as well as the Bielefelder Mercator-Film GmbH, for which he worked from 1981 to 1991 and whose archive he later took over.

The sustainable development of the collection (and thus of the later archive) began in 1992 after Frank Becker took over the more than one hundred year old company "Papier-Bröker" in Brackwede. The archive management and several equipment that are used for professional film and sound editing as well as for other processing are now located in their basement rooms. The archive inventory, which has been compiled for over thirty years, includes not only important historical film and audio documents as well as feature films, but also historically significant film technology .

On September 13, 2011, the Frank Becker Foundation and thus the Bielefeld Media Archive was officially founded. The first CEOs were Frank Becker and Detlef Timmerhans. Since then, the foundation has not only devoted itself to archival tasks, but has also been involved in cultural matters. In addition to the task of collecting and preserving the archive holdings itself, it tries to keep the (analog) cinema experience present for all ages and to maintain cooperation with various institutions (including museums and other archives) and companies.

Archives holdings

One of the foundation's main concerns is to develop the media archive as an institution into an “ archive according to scientific rules”.

The holdings of the collection include (examples):

  • over 100,000 film rolls
  • over 50,000 records
  • various print media (including 25,000 film posters )
  • Film equipment and cinema technology; including several film projectors , of which u. a. The Bauer Sonolux II (35 mm) from 1936 as well as the Bauer Selecton II (for 16 mm) and the Ernemann VIIIb (35 mm) are mentioned, the latter two being in the “Scala” cinema in Bielefeld
  • the holdings of church media archives

Some peculiarities in the film stocks are roles of the predecessor of GDR television, the DFF , as well as films of the FFG or "Adenauer television", the first private television broadcaster in the Federal Republic , which was originally supposed to start operating at the beginning of 1961, but legally Restrictions failed.

The media archive is primarily committed to the collection and preservation of analog film and sound material and the associated technology in times of digital upheaval, for which the longer shelf life of analog material is cited. Accordingly, the foundation not only strives for the analogization of digital films, but also provides advice to other institutions, companies, private individuals, etc. in dealing with them.

The maintenance of the historical technology represents an essential field of activity in the work with the archive holdings. The foundation offers courses that make the work of the projectionist tangible for the layman and give him an insight into the functioning of the machines.

In summer 2014, the Frank Becker Foundation was given the feature film collection of Wolfsburg collector Wolfgang Schneider (1931–2011). In November of the same year the film rolls were transferred to Bielefeld, to a warehouse of the MAB. Schneider had accumulated a good 2,000 films in over 50 years, which corresponds to a weight of around 30 tons. For this collection, he had a home cinema set up in his house in the Wolfsburg district of Ehmen .

The MAB also houses around 500 editions of the Deutschlandspiegel (in various languages), which was produced from 1954 to 2004 and was intended to promote the Federal Republic of Germany.

Activities and collaborations

The Bielefeld media archive cooperates with numerous television and radio companies, museums, cinemas and other archives in various fields. Examples are the German Film Institute , the Düsseldorf Film Museum and the Federal Archives . Private individuals and the rights holders of various films, some of which are in the MAB itself, are also partners or approach the archive with inquiries. Among other things, the media archive not only makes the analog film and sound material available to them, but also advises them and makes digital copies as required.

In the context of his work as archivist and chairman of the foundation, Frank Becker works as a cinema operator. In 1998 he founded the "Melodie-Filmtheater" in Brackwede. In the years 2000 and 2003 the "Rhythmus" and the "Odins" followed (in Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock and Bad Lippspringe ). Becker retired from the board of the last two cinemas in November 2014. The institutions want to switch to digital technology in the future and are striving to become non-profit.

In addition, the MAB offers a traveling cinema and has its own fixed cinema: the “Scala” in Bielefeld. This can also be used for other events (e.g. festivities, seminars).

As part of the 800th anniversary of the city of Bielefeld, the Bielefeld media archive appeared as a cooperation partner of the major event and presented its extensive archive material and a. for the report “Heimatabend Bielefeld” ( WDR ).

The business film archive project was launched in 2012. The main concerns are the viewing and preservation of valuable film holdings from the economic sector, with the focus on the East Westphalia-Lippe region . One focus is on digitizing the holdings . With the initiative, the foundation would like to arouse greater interest and awareness for their respective film documents, especially among corporations and institutions. The work of the Frank Becker Foundation will benefit the respective economic institutions, especially with regard to the use of the films for their public relations work . Within the scope of this project, the MAB works closely with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of East Westphalia in Bielefeld , the Westphalian Economic Archive Foundation in Dortmund and the historical department of Bielefeld University . The films released by the OWL Business Film Archive are to be made available to the general public via a web portal.

The radio journal

Another special feature of the archive is the radio Journal (until 2018: Brackweder radio Journal) represents As part of the. Citizens broadcasting program is usually on every third Thursday of the month (between about 21 and 22 hours) at Radio Bielefeld sent and created since 2002 ( from the fourth edition) in the "Studio am Mauseteich". This studio was set up by Frank Becker himself in 1991. Various documentaries he produced were also made here.

As part of the radio journal, Frank Becker invites a guest who plays an important role in public life in Bielefeld or beyond to join the conversation. Thematically, it is always about the invited person and their respective activity or institution that they represent. In addition to a current issue, Becker's intention is that the tape with the broadcast should be kept in the archive and preserve the respective guest (or their voice) for future generations. In the meantime, over 210 issues have been created in this way.

The guests so far have included MEP Elmar Brok , entrepreneurs such as Gerhard "Gerry" Weber or Richard and August Oetker , musician Willi Astroth, Bielefeld city archivist Jochen Rath, pop singer Bob Franco and presenter Marcus Werner . Several mayors of the city of Bielefeld also appeared in the “Studio am Mauseteich”.
