Scherawna (also spelled Zheravna , Žeravna or Jeravna , Bulgarian Жеравна ) is an eastern Bulgarian village at the foot of the Balkan Mountains in the municipality of Kotel in the district / Oblast Sliven . Due to their unique architecture, the old houses have been placed under monument protection ( architecture reserve ) and have been named number 56 of the country's 100 national tourist sites by the Bulgarian Tourist Association .
location
Scherawna lies at the foot of the Eastern Balkan Mountains, on the border between the Eastern and Central Balkan Mountains. The village is 14 km south of Kotel , around 328 km east of the Bulgarian capital Sofia and around 120 km west of the Black Sea port city of Burgas in a scenic location in the middle of the surrounding mountains.
history
Coin finds show that the origins of the village go back to the 2nd to 3rd centuries when Thracians settled there. Scherawna belonged to both the First Bulgarian Empire and the Second Bulgarian Empire , where it was at the crossroads of two important trade routes. In its immediate vicinity are the remains of Orthodox monasteries from the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries, which were destroyed during the Ottoman rule . During this time the village enjoyed a privileged position as a “free locality”, which explains the preservation of its ethnic and religious homogeneity and the development of its prosperity. Due to its location at the crossroads of different paths, Scherawna developed into an important center of the early rebirth movement .
The place has given its name to the Scherawna Glacier on Greenwich Island in Antarctica since 2005 .
