Vincent Capillaire (born February 4, 1976 in Le Mans ) is a French racing car driver .

Career in motorsport

Vincent Capillaire began his career in 1997 in the French Formula Renault championship and returned to motorsport as a sports car driver in 2009 after a ten-year absence . He drove for DAMS in Formula Le Mans and also competed in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series and the V de V Challenge Endurance Moderne - Proto . After finishing second overall in 2013, he won the final ranking of this series in 2014.

From 2014 he competed for various teams in the European Le Mans Series and the FIA World Endurance Championship and was thus entered three times in the Le Mans 24-hour race . His best place in the final classification was eighth in the Oreca 03R used by Sébastien Loeb , together with Jan Charouz and René Rast in 2014 .

In addition to his activities as a racing driver, Capillaire also works as a driver instructor and trainer.

The Toyota affair

During the 2017 Le Mans 24-hour race , Capillaire was involved in the failure of Kamui Kobayashi's Toyota TS050 Hybrid . At the pit exit, Capillaire showed the Japanese waiting there during a safety car phase in the Toyota with the number 7 thumbs up. Kobayashi mistook Capillaire for a marshal and wanted to drive off despite the red light. He was instructed to stop again over the radio. When he was finally able to drive off, the clutch on the Toyota broke. Capillaire apologized for the misunderstood gesture after the race.
