The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series (previously: Euro-Racecar NASCAR Touring Series ) is a NASCAR- sanctioned stock car championship that is held in Europe.
history
At that time under the name Racecar Euro-Series , it was founded in 2008 by the French team FJ Groupe. The following year the first season took place. At the end of 2010, the series was recognized by the FIA after two years of mostly French racetracks . The calendar was then expanded so that more European races could be added. In early 2012, NASCAR began to support the series, but it is still under the FIA. Through the agreement with NASCAR, the series became the official NASCAR offshoot in Europe. Since 2012, the respective champion has also been invited to the NASCAR Nights of Champions Gala in the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte . On July 1, 2013, after the series entered into a partnership with Whelen Engineering , the series was renamed NASCAR Whelen Euro Series . The first race under the new name took place at the Tours Speedway in France.
In 2020, the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series races were also suspended due to the Covid 19 pandemic .
In addition, the EuroNASCAR Esports Series was founded. For the first time, a virtually experienced placement from a SimRacing championship is included in a real championship ranking .
Racetracks
The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series mainly runs on circuits . The French Tours Speedway and the Dutch Raceway Venray are the exception as short-track ovals . The circuits that are frequently used are the Spanish Circuit Ricardo Tormo near Valencia, the Italian Autodromo di Franciacorta , the British Brands Hatch , the Belgian Circuit Zolder and, since 2017, the Hockenheimring . The Czech Autodrom Most will be added for the first time in 2019 .
vehicles
The vehicles are inspired by the American NASCARs, but specially made for European routes. A V8 engine with 5.7 liter displacement from Chevrolet with 294 kW (400 hp ) is used as drive. The transmission has four gears, with manual shifting. The vehicles are rear-wheel drive .
The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series cars will also be used during the Race of Champions .
Specifications
The vehicles have the following specifications (as of 2016):
- Power: 294 kW (400 PS)
- Weight: 1210 kg
- Height: 1300 millimeters
- Length: 5080 millimeters
- Wheelbase: 2740 millimeters
- Width: 1950 millimeters
New chassis were used for 2016. The Chevrolet SS and the Ford Mustang were used. However, the drives are identical, so that the different brands are purely aesthetic in nature.
Championships
The series usually comprises six stations. Double points are awarded on the last two race weekends and are therefore considered a kind of playoff. In addition, the weakest result from the first four stations is deleted by a cancellation result before the last two race weekends are started. NASCAR Whelen Euro Series events last three days, with four races being driven. The total prize money in the 2016 season was more than 300,000 euros.
There are two drivers per vehicle. One of them in the Elite 1 class, the second of them in the Elite 2 class
A total of seven driver titles are awarded:
- Elite 1 drivers championship - main championship, open to gold, silver and bronze drivers
- Junior J.Sarran Trophy - for drivers under 25 years of age
- Challenger Trophy - Amateurs
- Elite 2 drivers championship - only for silver and bronze drivers.
- Legend Trophy - drivers aged 40 or over
- Rookie Cup - rookies
- Lady Cup - female drivers
As a reward, the driver who wins the Elite 1 title receives the opportunity to drive in a K&N race in Daytona . The remaining champions will be rewarded with participation in a race in a NASCAR-run league in the USA .
In addition to the driver titles, there is also the Teams Championship , with points being collected in the Elite 1 and Elite 2 championships.
