6 hours of Fuji 2018
The seventh 6-hour race of Fuji , also 6 Hours of Fuji , took place on October 14, 2018 at Fuji International Speedway and was the fourth round of the FIA World Endurance Championship 2018/19 .
Before the race
The CEFC TRSM Racing team parted ways with Manor before the race, the Ginetta G60-LT-P1 prototype first appeared in the entry list for the race but was later withdrawn.
On October 6, the Equivalence of Technology regulations were adjusted by the FIA, which means that the two Toyota plants have to load 26 kg. In addition, the hybrid prototypes lost their stint advantage over the LMP1 prototypes with a combustion engine. There were also adjustments to the Gran Turismo vehicles: the BMW M8 GTE smells 20 kg less weight and has 2 liters more tank volume. The Ford GTs were allowed to unload 18 kg, Porsche had to load 2 kg. There were no changes at Ferrari and Aston Martin.
The qualifying session for the two Gran Turismo classes began under cool but dry weather conditions. The two Danes Marco Sørensen and Nicki Thiim were able to place their Aston Martin Vantage AMR in the professional class ahead of the BMW M8 GTE with the number 82. In the amateur class, the Porsche 911 RSR with the number 88 from Dempsey - Proton Racing achieved the best starting position.
Despite the Equivalence of Technology adjustments in the LMP1 class, both Toyota were dominant in the qualification. The Toyota with starting number 7 took pole position ahead of its sister vehicle. The fastest Toyota was subsequently transferred to the last place on the grid in the LMP1 class because José María López drove too fast in the pit lane. The Dragonspeed prototype with the number 31 achieved the best starting position in the LMP2 class.
The race
The race started under wet conditions as it had rained before. After about 20 minutes the teams started the pit stops to put on slick tires. The BR Engineering BR1 prototype from Hedman, Hanley & van der Zande lost a wheel due to an incorrectly fastened wheel nut and slipped off the track. The team lost a lot of time and the prototype only came in 25th overall. The safety car had to be deployed for the first time after about half an hour, Motoaki Ishikawa burst the rear tires on the start and finish straight and the rear was damaged, the debris was spread all over the straight. Even before the safety car phase was over, rain began to set in and Gustavo Menezes lost control of the rebellion with the number 3 on slick tires , the prototype collided with the guardrail and could not restart the race. Because the teams switched to rain tires again, Jenson Button managed to briefly take first place overall on the SMP Racing prototype at the end of the safety car phase. The two Toyota quickly overtook the SMP Racing prototype and the trio Conway, Kobayashi and López crossed the finish line ahead of the sister car with Buemi, Nakajima and Alonso. The R13 Rebellion from Lotterer, Jani, Senna was rated third overall.
Shortly after the fifth hour of racing, the Allen & Hanley Dragonspeed LMP1 prototype stalled and was unable to restart the race. Jackie Chan DC Racing achieved a double victory in the LMP2 class. The trio Jaafar, Tan Jeffri crossed the finish line in front of the sister vehicle with Tung, Aubry and Richelmi.
The two Gran Turismo classes each won a Porsche 911 RSR. In the top class, Christensen & Estre won ahead of da Costa & Farfus. The trio Bergmeister, Lindsey, Perfetti came in first in the amateur ranking ahead of Yoluc, Hankey & Eastwood.
