West Rand ( English West Rand District Municipality ) is a district in the South African province of Gauteng . The administrative headquarters are in Randfontein . Mpho Nawa is the mayor. The African National Congress has a majority on the district council.

The name of the district comes from its location in the west of the Witwatersrand . In 2011 the district had 820,995 inhabitants according to the census. It covers an area of ​​4087 square kilometers.

In 2016, the municipalities of Randfontein and Westonaria were merged to form the municipality of Rand West City .
