Westonaria is a city in the South African province of Gauteng . It belongs to the municipality border West City in the district of West Rand .

geography

In 2011 the city had 10,259 inhabitants. The city is around 1500 meters above sea level. Neighboring settlements are the townships Bekkersdal with 47,213 and Simunye with 18,350 inhabitants and Venterspost with 1272 inhabitants. Randfontein is around 18 kilometers north and Johannesburg is 45 kilometers east . Westonaria is located in the west of the Witwatersrand area, which is known for its gold deposits.

history

In 1948 Westonaria received parish status. The place name is homophonic to the construction company Western Areas Ltd. who built the district. In 1964 Westonaria was declared a " white " community under the Group Areas Act . Until 2016, Westonaria was the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name , which then merged with the municipality of Randfontein to form today's municipality of Rand West City.

economy

Mining and agriculture are practiced around Westonaria. The Sibanye-Stillwater concern , which operates several gold mines, is based in Westonaria.

traffic

Westonaria is close to the junction of the N12 , which connects Johannesburg to Kimberley , and the R28 , which runs from Krugersdorp in the north to Vereeniging in the south. It is also due to the railway line that leads from Johannesburg to Kimberley, among other places. Commuter trains of the Gauteng Metrorail run between Oberholzer in the west and Johannesburg.
