Merafong City ( English Merafong City Local Municipality ) is a local municipality in the West Rand district of South Africa in the Gauteng province . The administrative headquarters of the parish is in Carletonville . Maphefo Mogale Letsie is the mayor.
The name of the community comes from the Setswana ; merafong means mining area . The municipal area consists of cities that were created as a result of gold mining in the area.
geography
The rivers Magalies , Rietspruit , Krokodil , Mooirivierloop and Wonderfontein Spruit flow through Merafong City . There is also a reservoir in the municipality, the Lancaster Dam . Some bodies of water are polluted with pollutants from mining activities.

Merafong City was formerly a so-called cross-boundary municipality , a municipality across provincial borders (Cross-boundary Municipalities Laws and Repeal Related Matters Act 23 of 2005). With the abolition of this, Merafong City was partially incorporated into the Northwest Province in 2005 , where this part of the municipality remained until 2009. After some violent protests in the township of Khutsong, the case came before the South African constitutional court . Specifically, the lawsuit alleged that Gauteng Province had not adequately guaranteed the public participation required by Section 118 of the constitution. The court ruled in July 2008 that the entire municipality should be incorporated into Gauteng Province.
population
In 2011 the community had 197,520 inhabitants. Of these, 86.5% were black, 11.8% white and 1.1% colored .
The first language was 23.7% IsiXhosa , 20.4% Setswana , 18.4% Sesotho , 12.2% Afrikaans, 6% isiZulu , 4.9% Xitsonga , 3.7% English 1.4% Sepedi and Siswati each, 0.5% each isiNdebele and Tshivenda , and 1.5% another language.
economy
There is a lot of gold in the parish territory. The deposits are among the largest in the world. Therefore, mining is also the municipality's most important industry (35% of GVA , 2008). Other economic activities are trade with 15 percent of GVA and finance , logistics and other services and the public service with around 10 percent each.

The community is connected to the national road network via the national roads N12 and N14 .
