Ronald Lionel Kennedy (born May 7, 1953 in North Battleford , Saskatchewan , Canada , † July 9, 2009 in Klagenfurt , Austria ) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach.
Player career
Kennedy began his career with the Estevan Bruins in the Western Canada Hockey League . The next stop was the New Westminster Bruins . Kennedy was selected as number 65 in the fifth round of the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft by the New York Islanders . He then played in the Central Hockey League and International Hockey League with the Fort Worth Wings , Fort Worth Texans , Muskegon Mohawks and the Kalamazoo Wings .
In the summer of 1978 he moved to Europe and played three seasons in the Netherlands for the Nijmegen Tigers . At the end of the 1980/81 season he left the Tigers and joined the EC Hanover , for which he completed 16 league games in the following period. From 1982 to 1984 Kennedy played at HC Innsbruck in Austria . In 1984 he returned to North America and played seven more games with the Indianapolis Checkers .
Coaching career
Kennedy began his career in the Western Hockey League with the Medicine Hat Tigers . In 1992 he became the coach of Villacher SV . At that time he won his first Austrian championship title with the Villachers . After two years as head coach, he became assistant coach for the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League for one year in 1994 . His first coaching station in the German Ice Hockey League was EC Hannover in 1995 . From 1996 to 1998 he was the trainer of the Eisbären Berlin . During this time he also started as a coach for the Austrian national team (1996).
Kennedy remained the coach of the Austrians until 2002, on the side he coached the Villacher SV again from 1998 to 2002, with which he won two more championship titles. In the 2002/03 season, Kennedy coached the Italian first division club HC Bozen . In 2003 he returned to Germany and trained at ERC Ingolstadt until 2008 . From January 2008 he was the coach of HC Innsbruck . In December 2008 he resigned from his coaching position in Innsbruck for health reasons. On July 9, 2009, Ron Kennedy died of a brain tumor . His urn was transferred to the family grave in Kelowna , British Columbia .
