The Sentrarand marshalling yard is located between the South African villages of Bapsfontein and Etwatwa in the metropolitan municipality of Ekurhuleni in Gauteng . It is operated by Transnet Freight Rail .
structure
The marshalling yard is located at a Y-shaped junction of two bypass lines , which allow deliveries from both Pretoria and Johannesburg . Of the four originally planned sections, only one sector was built. The existing station area takes up an area of about 6000 hectares .
The Sentrarand marshalling yard is divided into the following areas: an entry group with 22 tracks, the shunting area (direction group) with 64 tracks, two downstream sorting zones with 10 tracks and an exit group with 32 tracks. The marshalling yard can accommodate a total of 6,860 standing wagons.
The reason for the construction of a large marshalling yard resulted from a comprehensive reduction in the number of many small systems of this type and thus in favor of more effective freight handling by rail for the nearby metropolitan areas.
history
The idea of an efficient marshalling yard for the densely populated and heavily industrialized conurbations of Johannesburg and Pretoria has been discussed since 1956. Concrete planning began in 1969 and the first site work for the project began in 1978. In September 1982, the marshalling yard went into operation.
