Chelmsford is an administrative district with the status of a City and a Borough in the county of Essex in England . The largest city and administrative seat of the borough and the second largest city and administrative seat of the county of Essex is Chelmsford .

The county was formed on April 1, 1974 and resulted from the merger of the city of Chelmsford with most of the Rural District of Chelmsford. On 1 June 2012, the county was given the status of a City .
