Debden Underground Station
Debden is an above-ground station on the London Underground . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 6 and is one of 14 outside Greater London . It is located on Rectory Lane in the village of Debden, in the Epping Forest district of Essex . In 2014, 2.48 million passengers used this station served by the Central Line .
history
The station was opened on April 24, 1865 by the Great Eastern Railway (GER), as part of the new section between Loughton and Ongar . It was initially called Chigwell Road , but was named Chigwell Lane on December 1 of the same year . From May 23, 1916 to February 2, 1918 the station was closed due to lack of demand. From 1923 the line was owned by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER).
After the nationalization of the LNER, the line went into the possession of British Railways for a few months in 1948 , which allowed shuttle trains with steam locomotives to run on the not yet electrified section. The subway began operating on September 25, 1949, the same day the station was given its current name. In 1974 the station building was largely rebuilt, but the station board's house has been preserved from the early days.
