history

The station was opened on August 22, 1856 by the Eastern Counties Railway (ECR). Loughton was initially the terminus of a suburban railway line running from Stratford for nine years . In 1862 the ECR was part of the Great Eastern Railway . This erected a new building that was shifted around 450 meters to the south and put it into operation on April 24, 1865, together with the extension to Epping and Ongar .

From 1923 the line was owned by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). On behalf of the London Passenger Transport Board , LNER had a new station building built, which was opened on April 28, 1940. The underground service began on November 21, 1948. For about ten months, Loughton was the northern terminus; British Railways trains hauled by steam locomotives ran on the remainder of the route until September 25, 1949 , when the London Underground took over operations here after electrification was complete.
