Vindeby was the world's first offshore wind farm . It went into operation in 1991 off the coast of Vindeby on the Danish island of Lolland . In 2017 it was dismantled after a period of more than 25 years. Its regular energy capacity corresponded to the annual electricity consumption of more than 2,200 households. The wind farm produced a total of around 243 million kWh of electrical energy.

With eleven Bonus B35 / 450 kW wind turbines , the wind farm had a nominal output of almost five megawatts. Modern wind farms have a multiple of this output.

Vindeby was originally designed for a term of 20 years. Despite the high pollution caused by the salty air at sea, the technology proved to be so robust that the wind farm could be operated for almost six years longer. The wind farm is considered a milestone in wind energy. The knowledge that the operators were able to gather here was incorporated into the construction and operation of numerous other offshore wind farms.
