The 102nd German Athletics Championships were held from July 5th to 7th, 2002 in Bochum - Wattenscheid in the Lohrheidestadion .
In the pole vault , Annika Becker set a new European record with 4.77 m and Melanie Schulz improved the German record to 9: 38.31 minutes in the young women's discipline 3000 m obstacle .
There was one last innovation for the time being with regard to the competition program. The 3000 m obstacle course has now also been introduced as a championship discipline for women. So now the competition program for women is pretty much the same as that for men. There were exceptions in walking , where the 50 km were reserved for men. In 2016, the IAAF then decided to introduce a 50 km route for women at the World Walkers' World Championships. It is still unclear when this walking distance will be included in the German championships for women. Further differences can be found in the main part of the championships. There the length of the non-Olympic track walk is 5000 m for women and 10,000 m for men. In addition, there are two cross-country routes for men and only one for women. In addition, the women in the long relay run 3 times 800 m, the men 3 times 1000 m.
The championships in some disciplines took place outside this event, named in the following list in chronological order:
- Cross-country run - Regensburg , March 9th, a route for women and a medium and long distance for men, each with individual and team ratings
