Claudia Andrea Barbara Gesell (born December 18, 1977 in Tirschenreuth ), married Claudia Meier-Gesell , is a former German middle-distance runner who specialized in the 800-meter course .

Career

In 1993 she switched from triathlon to athletics and in 1996 she became Junior World Champion over 800 meters in Sydney and with the German 4 x 400 meter relay . In 1999 she was U23 European champion over 800 meters and made it to the semi-finals at the World Athletics Championships in Seville and a year later at the Olympic Games in Sydney .

At the European Championships in Munich in 2002 and at the World Athletics Championships in 2003 in Paris / Saint-Denis, she was fifth. In the 2004 season she was handicapped by several flu infections and was eliminated from the Olympic Games in Athens . After the European Indoor Championships in Madrid, which she finished sixth, she suffered an injury to the Achilles tendon , which prevented participation in the World Championships in Helsinki and made an operation necessary. She was a total of 13 times German champion over 800 m.

Claudia Gesell first started for LAC Quelle Fürth , then from 1999 to 2005 for TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen and then moved to LAV ASICS Tübingen. She graduated from the Max-Reger-Gymnasium in Amberg and has been a qualified sports scientist since 2006 after studying at the Technical University of Munich .

After various injuries, she ended her active career in 2007.

Claudia Meier-Gesell is married and has two children. Today she works as a sports educator at the Gregor-Mendel-Gymnasium in Amberg .
