The DJK Schwäbisch Gmünd - officially DJK-Sportgemeinschaft Schwäbisch Gmünd e. V. - is a sports club from Schwäbisch Gmünd with the divisions football , table tennis and volleyball . The women in the table tennis department played in the Bundesliga in the 1970s. The men of the volleyball department were successful and also played in the Bundesliga in the 1970s.

Table tennis

The table tennis department was founded in 1962. Initially two men's teams started, later the women also became active. They became South German team champions and cup winners in 1971. A year later, the first women's team (Sigrid Hans, Ulrike Dürre, Ulrike Haase, Klara Hudak, Elfriede Lautenbach) rose from the league to the Bundesliga group south. When the single-track Bundesliga for women was introduced in 1975/76, Schwäbisch Gmünd was there. The best result was achieved in 1977 with 3rd place. Karin Sökler, Birgit Balke, Ulrike Eichele and Sigrid Hans (now Sigrid Barth) played. In the same year, the second women's team was promoted to the league. Due to several departures, the 1st team was relegated from the Bundesliga in 1979. Further departures forced the withdrawal from professional sport in 1981.

Today (2018) the table tennis department has about 100 members. Four men's teams are still active at district and district level. There is also a youth and a school team.

volleyball

The first women's team has been playing successfully for years, with short interruptions, in the regional league. In the current 2014/2015 season they are the clear leaders in the Regionalliga Süd and are aiming for promotion to the 3rd Bundesliga. The second women's team plays in the Landesliga Nord.

The volleyball department was founded in 1965 by Manfred Klotzbücher.

The association has been organizing the Albmarathon every October since 1991 , the last race in the European Ultramarathons Cup . He is also the organizer of the Gmünder Stadtlauf , which has been held annually in March since 1986, and has been a partner of the DRK district association Schwäbisch Gmünd since 1996 in organizing the Gmünder DRK 12- hour run in May .
