The Altai Nature Reserve ( Russian заповедник Алтайский ; Altajskij Zapovednik ) is a Russian nature reserve , which in the Altai Republic in the Altai Mountains lies. The protected area covers a total area of ​​8,812 square kilometers and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Golden Mountains of the Altai , which also includes the Katun Nature Reserve . In the northwest, the Altai nature reserve borders on the famous Teletsk Lake , which is known as the pearl of Western Siberia. The eastern shore of the lake is already part of the reserve. Further south in places forms Chulyshman - and Karakem -flow the western border of the park. The altitude of the protected area ranges from 430 m to 3500 m above sea level. The highest point is the Toschkalykaja (3507 m). The main habitats of the reserve include dry steppes, which occur mainly in the area of ​​the Chulyshman River, forests dominated by firs , pines and Siberian larches , mountain meadows and alpine zones with mats and rocks.

The different habitats of the reserve provide a home for numerous larger mammals. In the taiga areas live wild reindeer , Altai Morale , moose , Siberian deer , musk deer , brown bears , wolverines , wolves and lynx in the mountains the Siberian ibex , argali and snow leopard before. Around 300 bird species have been recorded in the reserve, of which around 180 also breed in the area. Particularly noticeable are the black stork , white-tailed eagle , golden eagle and Altai king hen.
