Johannes Andreas Olearius (born September 24, 1639 in Querfurt , † June 6, 1684 in Weißenfels ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

The son of Johannes Olearius (1611–1684) was given basic philosophical and theological knowledge by the father at an early stage. In 1657 he moved to the University of Jena , where he acquired a master's degree in philosophy in 1659 and was accepted among the theological candidates. While studying theology he attended lectures by Johannes Musäus , Christian Chemnitz (1615–1666), Johann Ernst Gerhard the Elder and Sebastian Niemann . After giving his own lectures there, he went to the universities in Leipzig , Wittenberg and Frankfurt (Oder) .

In 1662 he went on a scholarly trip with his brother Johann Gottfried Olearius . This led him to Heidelberg , Basel and Strasbourg . Over the Rhine they reached the Dutch universities in Utrecht , Leiden , Franeker and Groningen via Cologne . At the end of 1662 they had returned to Halle, where he took over a sermon at Hallesches Dom on Christmas Day because of his father's indisposition . This was heard by Duke August von Sachsen-Weißenfels , who encouraged him to acquire a theological degree and gave him the opportunity to receive a preaching office in Halle.

So he moved back to Jena, held his inaugural disputation there on February 18, 1663 and was made a licentiate in theology on February 19, 1663 . In Halle he became an adjunct to his father and early preacher at Halle Cathedral. On July 13, 1664, he also acquired the theological doctorate in Jena and in 1671 was appointed consistorial assessor, church councilor and vice-general superintendent of the Principality of Querfurt in Weißenfels by Duke August. He remained so under the leadership of Duke Johann Adolf I of Saxony-Weißenfels . Shortly after the death of his father, he fell ill and died of flu and was buried on June 8th. He left behind various sermons and disputations, but did not write any extensive exegetical works.
