Johann Ernst Gerhard the Elder (born December 15, 1621 in Jena ; † February 24, 1668 there ) was a German Lutheran theologian .

Life

Johann Ernst Gerhard was the son of the theologian Johann Gerhard and his wife Maria Gerhard, geb. Mattenberg. At the age of 15 he enrolled at the University of Jena in 1637 . In 1640 he continued his studies at the University of Altdorf , returned to Jena in 1642 and in 1643 acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. In 1646 he went to the University of Wittenberg , became an adjunct at the Philosophical Faculty and in 1650 went on a study trip that took him to various universities in France, Holland and Switzerland. After his return he became professor of history at the University of Jena in 1652. In 1653 he received his doctorate in theology and in 1655 professor of theology in Jena. He also participated in the organizational tasks of the Salana and was rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semesters of 1661 and 1667 .

On the day of his doctorate (July 12, 1653) he married Katharina Elisabeth Plathner (born February 27, 1626 in Langensalza; † March 11, 1671 in Jena), the widow of the medical professor Christoph Schelhammer . From this marriage Johann Friedrich Gerhard, Johann Ernst Gerhard, Sophie Elisabeth Gerhard and Maria Elisabeth Gerhard, who married Johann Adrian Slevogt in 1682 , are known.
