The catchment areas of Katun and Bija, including the Chulyshman

The 241 km long Tschulyshman ( Russian Чулышман ) is the largest tributary of Lake Teletsk in the Altai ( Russia , Asia ). Since the Bija leaving the lake forms the Ob together with the Katun , the Chulyshman can be considered one of the source rivers of the Ob.

course

The Chulyshman rises in the east of the Altai, in the valley between the here over 3500  m high Schapschalkamm and Tschulyschmanhochland ( Чулышманское нагорье nagorje / Tschulyschmanskoje; also, Tschulyschmanskoje ploskogorje Tschulyschmanbergland) near the border with Tuva at about 2300  m . Near the source it flows through the 29.5 km² large lake Dschulukul ( Джулукуль ), then crosses the Tschulyschman highlands in a westerly direction. After that, the river turns to the northwest and flows through - over its entire length on the territory of the Republic of Altai - a narrow, deep valley between Tschulyschmanhochland and Ulaganplateau ( Улаганское плато / Ulaganskoje plato) to eventually about 10 kilometers below the only settlement on the River , Balyktscha , to flow into the Teletsk lake ( 434  m ).

Hydrography

The catchment area of the Tschulyshman covers 16,800 km². At Balyktscha the mean water flow is 160 m³ / s (minimum in March with 15.9 m³ / s, maximum in June with 564 m³ / s). The Tschulyschman provides 70% of the water supply of the Teletsk lake. In the lower reaches the river is about 140 m wide, 3 m deep, the flow velocity is 0.5 m / s. The most important tributary is the Baschkaus, which flows in from the left 20 kilometers above Lake Teletsk . Other significant tributaries are from left Bogojasch ( Богояш ), from right Usunojuk ( Узуноюк ) Schawla ( Шавла ; not to be confused with the right tributary Schawla of Argut in the central Altai) and Tschultscha ( Чульча ).

The Tschulyshman freezes over between late October and early December and becomes ice-free between late March and early May. From May to September it leads to high water.

Tourist importance

With the large number of rapids and waterfalls distributed almost over its entire length of more than 200 kilometers, the Chulyshman is one of the most difficult rivers in Russia that can be navigated by canoe or rubber dinghy . Like its tributary Baschkaus, it is classified in the highest Russian difficulty category VI (according to international classification V, in places VI) over long stretches of the central reaches . Despite its upper course, which is difficult to access due to the distance to inhabited areas, it is particularly popular among Russian canoeists.
