The Bija ( Russian Би́я ) is a 301 km long river in Russia , in the Altai Republic and in the Altai region .

It is the smaller of the two source rivers of the Ob (next to the Katun ). The Bija flows from Lake Teletsk in the Altai Mountains . Its course leads it in a northwesterly direction to Biysk , where it unites with the Katun to the Ob. The Bija has a catchment area of 37,000 km². 21 km before the mouth, the mean discharge is 476 m³ / s. The name "Bija" has its origins in the Altaic language and stands for "man". The Chulyshman forms the main tributary of Lake Teletsk and is therefore a source of the Bija.
