The 101st German Athletics Championships were held from June 29th to July 1st 2001 in Stuttgart . For the seventh time, Stuttgart hosted. The championships were held in the Neckar Stadium for the last time , as this was converted into a pure football stadium.
In the pole vault , Annika Becker set a new German record with 4.55 m. Luminita Zaituc achieved a special feat . She dominated the long distances almost completely with victories over 10,000 m on the track, in the 10 km road run , in the marathon as well as over the medium and long distance in cross country . She also took second place on the track over the 5000 m . The only thing missing was the half marathon , in which she did not start.
For the first time in the discipline of road running, in addition to the runs over the distances half marathon , marathon and 100 km, from 2001 a competition for women and men over 10 km was held.
The championships in some disciplines took place outside of this event, named in the following list in the order in which they were held:
- The cross-country runners started in Regensburg on March 3rd . There was a medium and a long distance with individual / team ratings for women and men.
- The half marathon took place on March 24th in Arnstadt - with individual / team evaluation for women and men.
- The 20 km walk (women) / 50 km walk (men) was held on April 8th in Naumburg with individual scores and a team score over the 50 km distance.
- In the 100 km road race , the champions were determined on May 12th in Neuwittenbek near Kiel . There was an individual rating for women as well as individual and team ratings for men.
- The 10,000 m races for women and men as well as the long relays - 3-times-800-m (women) / 3-times-1000-m (men) - were held in Kandel on May 19 .
- The men met for the 20 km walk on June 9th in Eisenhüttenstadt. It was scored individually and in a team.
- The mountain run took place on June 23 in Lauf / Achern - with individual / team evaluation for women and men.
- The all-around fighters - heptathlon (women) / decathlon (men) - determined their champions on the 25th / 26th. August in Vaterstetten - each with individual / team ratings.
- The 10 km road race , which was included in the program for the first time , was held on September 23 in Troisdorf - with individual / team evaluation for women and men.
- The marathon was again integrated into a city marathon , this year in Frankfurt am Main on October 28th. There were individual and team ratings for women and men.
