Spiel und Sport Schalke 1896 , known as SuS Schalke 96 , is a sports club from Gelsenkirchen .

history

The club was founded in 1896 and chose blue and white as its club colors. In the early days of football, the SuS was one of the leading clubs in Westphalia . Schalke were three times before the First World War in the regional finals for the West German championship. In 1906 they failed in the preliminary group without a chance at Duisburger SpV , Cologne FC 1899 , forerunner of VfL Cologne 1899 , and Viktoria Ratingen . Two years later they met Duisburger SpV again in the quarter-finals and lost 1:10. The last and most successful participation in the West German finals was in 1912 . After defeating FC Preußen Münster in two games 4: 4 and 3: 2, Schalke were in the semi-finals. There the SuS retired with a 2: 6 defeat at the Essen SV 99 .

In 1919 the SuS merged with the Turner Club 1874 Gelsenkirchen to form TuS Gelsenkirchen 74/96 , which still exists today as the Turner Club Gelsenkirchen 1874 . In 1924 - in the course of the clean divorce - the two clubs separated again and again took on their old names.

The further football history of the SuS Schalke 96 ran without major highlights. At the end of the 30s, the club stopped playing football and primarily pursued athletics. From 2009 to 2014, the handball department formed the handball game community HSG Schalke 04/96 with FC Schalke 04 . For the 2014/15 season the syndicate was ended and the handball department of the SuS Schalke 96 was dissolved. The athletics department is the only department of the club.
