Just like in the three previous years, the German Athletics Championships - it was the 30th - were held in two competitions separated by sex. What was new this time was that both events took place at the same time, even if the women's championship lasted only two days, while the men's championship lasted three days. The men determined their champions from July 14th to 16th, 1928 in the Rheinstadion in Düsseldorf , the women on July 14th and 15th in Berlin .
Two competitions have been outsourced:
- Forest run - Weimar , April 22nd
- 50 km walking (men) - Nuremberg , October 7th - only walking competition in the championship program
The year 1928 was a special one for German sport. For the first time after the First World War , German athletes were again admitted to participate in international competitions. Germany was excluded from the Olympic Games in 1920 and 1924 and the Winter Games in 1924 . For many athletes, these German championships were therefore very much characterized by qualifying for the games in Amsterdam . The level was correspondingly good and in Amsterdam the first ever German Olympic gold medal in athletics was won: Lina Radke geb. Batschauer became Olympic champion over 800 meters .
There were only a few changes in the competition program:
- The extra-long track of 25,000 meters was canceled after three years, and since then the 10,000 meters remain the longest track.
- For women, the three-way fight was replaced by the pentathlon . It consisted of the following disciplines: Day 1 - shot put, high jump, 200 m / day 2 - 80 m hurdles, long jump and was evaluated for many years according to an older German point table.
There were two new German records:
- Pole vault - Julius Müller 3.82 m
- Javelin throw with both arms - Erich Stoschek 103.85 m
The following overview summarizes the medalists of all competitions from 1928.
