Erich Huebner

Erich Hübner (born March 2, 1917 in Leipzig , † February 23, 1985 in Heidelberg ) was a German church musician . From 1951 until his death he was cantor in Heidelberg-Handschuhsheim, became director of the Heidelberg Bach Choir in 1956, founded the Heidelberg Kantorei in 1967, organized the 44th German Bach Festival in Heidelberg in 1969 and was a member of the Standing Conference for Church Music in the EKD from 1974. He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

Life

From 1936 he studied church music at the Church Music Institute in Leipzig, but had to interrupt his studies because of the Second World War. Having come to Heidelberg as a prisoner of war, he continued his studies at the church music institute there with Poppen .

In 1945, while still a student, he became director of the trombone choir at the Friedenskirche in the Heidelberg district of Handschuhsheim . After completing his studies, he taught himself at the Church Music Institute, became a choir director and organist in Mannheim-Rheinau and in 1951 cantor of the Handschuhsheimer Friedenskirche. In 1956 he took over the direction of the Heidelberg Bach Choir after Poppen and as such organized the 44th German Bach Festival in Heidelberg in 1969. He became district and state choirmaster as well as regional chairman of the Baden church musicians and in 1967 founded the Heidelberg choir. In 1970 he received the Federal Cross of Merit . In 1972 he was appointed professor at the State University for Music in Berlin , but turned it down. In 1974 he became a member of the Standing Conference for Church Music in the Evangelical Church in Germany. In 1978 he was appointed professor by the Baden-Württemberg state government. Shortly before his death, he was also awarded the Karl Straube plaque for his services to church music .

In Heidelberg-Handschuhsheim, where he was buried, the Erich-Hübner-Platz has been named after him since 2007 .
