Temporary Gallery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Temporary Gallery is a German non-profit and registered association based in Cologne , which is dedicated to the mediation of contemporary art .

history

The Temporary Gallery was founded as a rental gallery in 2008 by the director of Art Cologne Daniel Hug and the two Cologne gallery owners Christian Nagel and Thomas Rehbein. The concept of a rental gallery originally came from New York. International galleries were able to exhibit their artists here for four to six weeks and make them known on the Cologne market. The 270 m² rooms in Cologne's Altstadt-Süd district , Mauritiuswall 35, were converted and expanded for art exhibitions by the Düsseldorf architect Marie-Céline Schäfer.

In 2012 the Temporary Gallery changed its direction under the new artistic direction of Regina Barunke. Since then it has been organized as a non-profit association and today has the character of an art association. Since 2014, the Temporary Gallery - after winning a competition for a Cologne center for contemporary art - has also been funded by the City of Cologne. The project sees itself today as a “young, non-commercial initiative for contemporary art in Cologne”. It wants to enable “especially young artists” to “try out new artistic methods and techniques”. The Temporary Gallery is a member of the German Art Association .

The gallery was formerly managed by Daniel Müller (2009), Caroline Nathusius (2010–2011) and Regina Barunke (2012–2018). Aneta Rostkowska has taken over the artistic and executive management since January 2019.

Positions

The Kunstverein is an exhibition center for contemporary painting , photography and graphics , installation , video art and architecture and also organizes guided tours and lecture series and other events to promote contemporary art and artists. It organizes five to six exhibitions a year that present and evaluate current developments in the visual arts. In the summer months, works by talented artists from Cologne are shown.

Awards

In 2018 the Kunstverein received the ADKV-ART COLOGNE Prize for Art Associations from the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Deutscher Kunstvereine and Art Cologne. The jury's statement said: The Temporary Gallery succeeds in providing a framework for both historically well-founded and contemporary positions, far removed from the art market or fashion trends, which are carefully conveyed and connected to current discourses.
