Hoffmeister was German champion in discus throwing in 1926, 1930 and 1931. In 1927 he won the silver medal in the javelin throw.

On July 22, 1928, he threw his personal best and the world record with 48.77 meters in Gelsenkirchen. The litter was not officially recognized as a world record. Hoffmeister was invited to take part in the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 . There he did not achieve a significant place because he had to throw a replacement disc. His own disc had not been transported to Amsterdam in time for the Olympics. A few weeks after the Olympics, he unofficially beat the Olympic champion with his own discus. In 1928 Hoffmeister won the Irish championships in discus and javelin throw.

Hans Hoffmeister's sports career came to an end when he was excluded from the German championships in 1934 for political reasons.

Hoffmeister worked as a graphic artist and caricaturist. His main motives were athletes before or after the competitions and also the visitors to the bars in his hometown. He worked out the sketches made on site in color at home. Hoffmeister made caricatures for regional newspapers.
