The 38th German Athletics Championships - held on July 11th and 12th, 1936 in Berlin - were dominated by the Olympic Games, which were also held in Berlin a few weeks later .
The reduction in the women's competition program from the previous year was retained. Behind this was the complete adaptation to the then current Olympic disciplines of women's athletics. There were only the three running disciplines 100 m , 80 m hurdles and the 4 × 100 m relay , the high jump as a jumping discipline and the discus and javelin throwing competitions .
Some disciplines have been outsourced:
- Marathon run and 50 km street walk - Berlin , June 21
- Decathlon with a very unusual format: the first five disciplines as part of the various Gaume Championships on June 28th / the other five disciplines in Berlin on July 5th
- all relay competitions - Nuremberg , September 12th
- Forest run - Freiburg im Breisgau , November 8th
The Olympic year 1936 was a special opportunity for the National Socialists to present themselves to the outside world with the Olympic Winter and Summer Games in their own country. The world should be led to believe that there is a democratic and liberal German Reich without the alleged hostility towards Jews . A number of Jewish “model athletes” were allowed to take part. For the perfidy of dealing with the athletes, the high jumper stands in a special way Gretel Bergmann that her family was pushed over to participate first with repression, which then, however, despite the service provided proof - m with setting the German record of 1.60 at 27 June 1936 - was not admitted. She was also not allowed to take part in the German championships .
There were three records:
- Long jump : Luz Long 7.82 m - European record
- Triple jump : Heinz Wöllner 15.06 m - German record
- Discus throw : Gisela Mauermayer 48.31 m - world record
The winner of the high jump, Dora Ratjen , was later revoked her / his championship title from 1936 to 1938 because of her / his intersexuality .
The performances shown at these championships were at a high level by international standards at the time. In the discus throw , Gisela Mauermayer set a new German record with 48.31 m. The German track and field athletes reached the Olympic Games about six weeks later with u. a. five gold medals a track record like never before.
