Günther Gehmert

Günther Gehmert (born February 9, 1913 in Berlin , † June 9, 1940 in Montaigu , Département Vendée , France ) was a German athlete who specialized in the high jump .

The 1.88 m tall and 86 kg heavy athlete took part in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin together with Gustav Weinkötz and Hans Martens . While Hans Martens was eliminated at the starting height of 1.70 m, Günther Gehmert and Gustav Weinkötz effortlessly jumped the qualifying height of 1.85 m. In the final both athletes were able to improve. Günther Gehmert came to 1.90 m and Gustav Weinkötz to 1.94 m, which brought them tenth and sixth place in the high-class field - the first four athletes jumped 2 meters or higher.

In 1939 Günther Gehmert won his only German championship after three third places in 1935, 1936 and 1937.

His personal best is 1.95 m, set up in 1935.

Günther Gehmert started for the sports club Siemens Berlin, from 1937 for the DSC Berlin . In 1940 he died in World War II.
