The 48th German Athletics Championships were held on August 14th and 15th, 1948 in the municipal stadium in Nuremberg . The division of Germany had already progressed so far that it was only about the championships of the three western occupation zones . The Soviet occupation zone had its own championship competition. With a few exceptions, all competitions were held in Nuremberg as part of the event. In contrast to the men's decathlon, the women's 200-meter run, as in 1946 and 1947, was not on the program again. As before , the marathon was shortened this year to a distance of 30 km.
The following championship competitions took place at different locations on different dates:
- It started with the forest run (men), which took place in Fellbach near Stuttgart on April 18th on a route length with individual and team evaluation.
- In September, the remaining disciplines were held at an event in Hamburg :
- the marathon shortened to 30 km (September 19)
- the 25km street walking (September 19)
- the men's pentathlon (September 19)
- the all-round competitions (women: pentathlon ) / (men: and decathlon ), each with individual ratings (19/20 September).
