Heinrich Will (athlete)

Heinrich Otto "Heiner" Will (born October 22, 1926 in Möglin ; † October 18, 2009 in Rendsburg ) was a German javelin thrower .

Heiner Will from the Rendsburger Turn- und Sportverein went down in sports history as the first German athlete to throw the spear over 80 meters. The winner of the silver laurel leaf won his first German championship title in 1948, another four titles followed until 1959. In 1954 he set a first German record with 77.12 m, which he improved in 1956 to 80.22 m. The record lasted for almost five years. He took part in the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 and finished ninth with 70.38 m. Two years later, Will started at the European Championships. He played 37 international matches for Germany between 1953 and 1959. After his active career, he continued to play sports and won both national and international senior titles in javelin and shot put . With 13.84 m he holds the world record in the shot put in the M75 class. Will died shortly before his 83rd birthday after a serious illness.
