The DLC Aachen 1932 eV (advertised: Deutscher Leichtathletik-Club Aachen 1932 eV ) is an Aachen sports club that was founded in 1932 and focuses on running and triathlon . Of the just under 400 members, more than 70% belong to the triathlon division founded in 1989. This is represented with a total of eight teams (as of 2017) in various competitive leagues and has been fighting with one women's and one men's team in the second triathlon Bundesliga since the 2014 season . Both track and field athletes, especially in the older age groups , as well as triathletes of the club achieved top places in national and international competitions, including world, European and German championship titles.

history

The roots of the Aachen DLC lie in the Aachen gymnastics and sports club Alemannia Aachen 1900 eV , where at that time the small athletics department was unable to assert itself over the soccer field. As a result, a handful of track and field athletes left the Alemannia in 1932 and founded a new club, which they named "German Athletics Association Aachen 1932 eV" according to prevailing taste. In the beginning all classic athletics disciplines were offered here and the Aachen forest stadium and the surrounding Aachen forest functioned as a training facility .

After several years of interruption due to the Second World War , the DLC Aachen was confirmed as a new foundation on October 13, 1945 in the old meeting room of the Aachen Chamber of Crafts . In the course of time the focus of the sport offer shifted increasingly to the running disciplines, from the middle distance up to the ultramarathon . From the 1980s onwards, the runners who formed the “ladies running team” were particularly successful. In the course of time, a “ walking team ” was added, but at the beginning of the 1990s, the majority of them switched to the athletics department of Alemannia Aachen, which was newly founded in 1956, as well as a cross-country skiing group, which also dissolved around 1990 due to a lack of suitable training opportunities in the region.

After the triathlon sport gradually gained a foothold in Germany from around 1982, the DLC also opened up for this new sport. This led to a rapidly increasing number of members, among other things due to the majority of members of the Triathlon University Sports Group of RWTH Aachen University joining the DLC, whereupon the DLC's independent triathlon department was founded on May 10, 1989 by resolution of the statutes, which joined the German Triathlon Union . This department quickly developed into the club's figurehead both qualitatively and quantitatively and celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2014 and its most successful season to date.

The club magazine “Der Rennschuh” has been published since 1949 to provide information to its members, initially several times a year and since 2009 once a year, providing a comprehensive overview of the club's activities.

Walter Rennschuh and Astrid Ganzow have been honored with the Charlemagne Seal of the City of Aachen for special sporting achievements .

Athletics department

In the first decades of club life, the classic athletics disciplines dominated, with the focus increasingly being placed on longer running routes from the 1970s. One of the reasons for this was 1974, the election of the Chairman-Hubert Kitchens for fun run waiting in Athletics Association Middle Rhine, whereupon the latter with the DLC, the people running motion, at the especially popular sport pioneer Ernst van Aaken played a key role, supported by training offers and running events for everyone intense.

Also inspired by van Aaken's commitment to long-distance running for women, the DLC increasingly opened up to women of all ages who were enthusiastic about cross-country skiing. Over the years, this group, which was initially somewhat ridiculed, developed into a powerful women's team, which with its athletes made it to the top of the German ranks in both the individual and, above all, the team rankings in the marathon and ultramarathon disciplines. Between 1992 and 2003, the women's DLC team was among the top ten of the German championships several times, in the first year in second place. But also on the ultra-marathon routes, runners of the club again and again took top places in national and international competitions as well as in German championships and in 1997 they won the German championship in the 50 km run.

The club's most successful track and field athlete in different age groups was the multiple world, European and German champion Walter Rennschuh in the technical and sprint disciplines. The running specialists, on the other hand, were not so successfully represented in the national top, with a few exceptions, but were able to achieve numerous successes in the team rankings as well as at the state and district level through top placements in the age groups and local course records. Outstanding achievements in the team rankings so far have included third place in the age group 50 at the 2008 German Marathon Championship in Mainz . and second place a year later, also in Mainz, and second place in the individual ranking in the age group 50 of the 2007 German marathon best list by Winfried Willems.

In addition, the DLC has been organizing various nationally known running events for many years. First, in the 1970s and 1980s, in accordance with the club philosophy at the time, he organized an annual fun run, which was replaced after a few years' break from 1995 by the Aachen New Year's Eve run, which developed into the sporting event with the most participants at the turn of the year in the Middle Rhine Athletics Association. In addition, from 1991 to 2011, the DLC offered an internationally open three-track series of 1500 m, 5000 m and 10,000 m in the Aachen Waldstadion every spring, which was christened the “Hubert Kitchen Series” in memory of the honorary chairman. Some of these three disciplines were repeatedly organized as district championships. Since 2012, this traditional event has been taken over by the athletics department of the Aachen TG .

Triathlon department

Just a few years after the triathlon department was founded on May 10, 1989, its members were able to convince with their performances at numerous demanding competitions and in the mid-1990s they were promoted to what was then the Bundesliga West, also known as the “crown league”, with a team. Outstanding individual athletes of this time included the team student world champion 1992 Gerrit-Jan Riemer, the Ultraman winner Holger Spiegel 1998, who set a course record that was still valid in 2014 with 21:41:22 hours, and the multiple Ironman Hawaii finisher Tobias Winnemöller, who also won the Ultraman in Hawaii in November 2014.

After a few years of decline in performance, financial bottlenecks and the associated withdrawal of the team from league operations, the department experienced a renewed upswing from 2009 through the initiative of a new board. By recruiting high-performing members and sponsors as well as a professional team of trainers, a men's team was again registered for the triathlon league in the same year. This then made five promotions in a row: from the Landesliga Süd to promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga. This means that the 1st team in the DLC triathlon department is only the second club in the history of North Rhine-Westphalia alongside the Cologne triathlon team that has made a smooth march through the leagues. In 2010 a second men's team was registered for the league, which also started in the NRW League in 2014 after four consecutive promotions. Since 2011, a third team has been fighting in the upper league of NRWTV and for 2015 the DLC has registered another team with NRWTV for the Landesliga-Süd. Outstanding individual achievements among men were winning the NRW duathlon championship in 2012 by Florian Renneberg, then 16, and the successful participation of Andreas List and Gunnar Keitzel at the Ironman Hawaii 2013 and Thomas Schulte 2014.

But the triathletes are in no way inferior to this: in 2010 for the first time with a team at the start, the first women's team rose to the NRW League a year later, where they made it to the 2nd Bundesliga as champions in 2013 and themselves since then successfully established there. After the end of the 2015 season, the women's team reached 3rd place, which was enough for promotion to the 1st Triathlon Bundesliga for the 2016 season, but which they could only hold for one season. A second women's team starts at the same time in the NRW League, the third highest league class. The outstanding individual athletes of the DLC are the world and European champion Astrid Stienen (formerly Ganzow), who switched to the professional camp since the 2014 season, as well as Nora Honka and Kristina Ziemons , both also Hawaii finishers 2014.

In addition, the DLC was and is still active as an organizer of various triathlon events after the department members had initially gained experience as an organizer of duathlons and MTB competitions in the Aachen area. From 1993 to 2002, the DLC, together with the education authority of the city of Heinsberg, was one of the organizers of the "Euroman" at Lake Adolfo in Hückelhoven , which was initially held as a middle distance, but from 1997 as a league competition and popular triathlon. In order to also give the youngsters a chance, the so-called “Next Generation Triathlon” was organized from 2001 for the years D to A with class-specific distances, which since then has been completely free of traffic on the Dr .-Leo-Löwenstein-Kaserne is carried out.

From this, from 2003, a separate group of children and young people with a focus on triathlon training developed within the DLC, from which individuals could qualify up to the German youth championships.
