Inferno triathlon
The Inferno Triathlon is a triathlon that has been held in the Bernese Oberland since 1998 in August . Compared to many other triathlon events, the necessary infrastructure is not provided at a central point, but the start, transition area and finish are located in different places. With 5500 meters of climbing over a distance of 155 km, it is very demanding.
organization
The triathlon starts in Thun , transition areas are in Oberhofen , Grindelwald and Stechelberg , the finish is on the Schilthorn , the half marathon starts in Lauterbrunnen and the athletes' village is in Mürren , which is also the destination of the Team Trophy.
In the triathlon, you first have to swim 3.1 km in Lake Thun , then 97 km by racing bike and 30 km by mountain bike . The conclusion is a mountain run over 25 km. In addition to the actual triathlon, other less demanding disciplines are offered.
history
The Inferno Triathlon emerged from the Inferno Mountain Run, which has been carried out for several years. In spring 1997 the mountain run organizers met with representatives of the Schilthornbahn to develop the event further. As a result, the mountain run was supplemented with a bike and a swimming route and thus expanded into a triathlon. A managing director with triathlon know-how was found, an organizing committee was formed and an association was founded.
In previous route tests with experienced triathletes, it was not clear whether the Inferno Triathlon with a 5500 m gradient could even be mastered. On August 22, 1998, after 16 months of preparation by the organizers, 87 athletes started the first Inferno Triathlon in Thun lido . Due to fog, cold and storm winds, the destination had to be moved to Mürren . Only 16 athletes were able to reach the Schilthorn beforehand , the other 57 participants finished the competition at the Mürren finish. Four more events with only 120 to 150 participants followed, until the breakthrough came in 2003: For the first time, the 250 starting places were sold out.
In 2000 the shorter “infernino triathlon” was replaced by the “Team Trophy”. 67 teams started at the first edition of the Team Trophy. The number of participants developed positively in the following years and in 2003 all 250 starting places were fully booked for the first time.
In 2011, the triathlon had to be held without the swimming distance due to unfavorable weather conditions.
In 2012 the 333 starting places were sold out.
In 2014 the triathlon was sold out again - due to the weather, the swimming discipline had to be canceled due to the cold water temperature. As a replacement, there was a running route of 3 km in Oberhofen .
The most successful participant is Marc Pschebizin with ten wins, three second places and one third place.
