Jan van Berkel (born March 27, 1986 in Bülach ) is a Swiss triathlete . He is the Ironman winner (2018), starts in the Swiss Triathlon long distance squad and is ranked fourth in the list of Swiss triathletes on the Ironman distance .

Career

In addition to Swiss citizenship, Jan van Berkel also has Dutch citizenship.

He was Swiss champion in the juniors and youth as well as Dutch U23 national champion. His nickname is "The Berkelizer".

Triathlon since 1998

Jan van Berkel operates Triathlon since 1998. In 2009, he was due to a dispute over the use of advertising space on the shirts of the Swiss Triathlon National Team Swiss Triathlon excluded.
He was a member of the Abu Dhabi Triathlon Team and the EWZ Power Team and is trained by the former German cyclist Heiko Salzwedel .

He missed qualifying for the Summer Olympics in London in 2012 and then started on the Ironman distance (3.86 km swimming, 180.2 km cycling and 42.195 km running).

Ironman Hawaii 2015

In July 2015 it was announced that Jan van Berkel, the 46th man in the Kona Points Ranking System , will receive a pro starting place for the first time in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii in October. The 50 highest placed professional triathletes, who collect the most points with their placements in Ironman competitions worldwide between August 31 and July 31 of the following year, are each qualified for the Ironman Hawaii in Kailua Kona .
In August 2015 he finished seventh in the middle distance at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in the Austrian province of Salzburg as part of the Ironman 70.3 Zell am See-Kaprun . At the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii in October, he suffered an ankle injury while exiting swimming and finished the race in 95th place.

In 2017 he qualified for the Ironman Hawaii for the third time .

Winner Ironman 2018 and 2019

In May 2018 he finished fifth at the Ironman Texas and was able to significantly undercut his personal Ironman best time of 7:48:40 h - however, according to the organizer, the route was shortened and Jan van Berkel himself gave 176.7 km and 176.7 km for the bike route 41.6 km for the running route.

In July 2018, after two second and two third places in Zurich, he clinched his first victory in Ironman Switzerland , which he was able to confirm in 2019. In October 2019, the 33-year-old finished eleventh in the Ironman Hawaii.

Private

His younger sister Martina van Berkel (* 1989) was active in swimming until 2017 and in 2012 took part in the Olympic Summer Games in London over 200 meters dolphin.

Jan van Berkel has largely avoided carbohydrates since 2017 and instead eats rich in fat and protein. So he lost weight and gained muscle mass.

In 2018 he married the former figure skater Sarah Meier and in January 2020 the 33-year-old became the father of a son. The family lives in Dielsdorf ZH .
