Martina van Berkel (* 23 January 1989 as Martina Eva van Berkel ) is a former Swiss (with Dutch nationality) swimmer and Olympian (2012). She is 65 times Swiss champion and holds many Swiss records.

Career

Martina van Berkel has both Swiss citizenship and Dutch citizenship. She started at the swimming world championships in 2009 and 2011, swam for the Limmat Sharks Zurich and was trained by Dirk Reinicke .

In 2003 she started at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Paris.

2012 Summer Olympics

Martina van Berkel was able to qualify for a starting place at the Olympic Games in London. She started over 200 meters butterfly , but could not reach the final. Since 2013 she has been trained by Michael Spikermann.

In April 2015 Martina van Berkel, who competes for the Nikar Heidelberg swimming club , was able to lower her own Swiss record over 400 m medley to 4: 47.95 min at the German championships in Berlin.

Summer Universiade 2017

In August 2007 she won silver in the 200 m butterfly at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei .
In November 2017, the 28-year-old declared her active time over when she won her 65th Swiss title over 200 m back.

Private

After studying journalism and communication science, she began a doctorate in 2013 at the Chair of Media Economics and Management at the University of Zurich , which she completed in 2017. Her older brother Jan van Berkel (* 1986) is active as a triathlete .
