The Adolfosee is a lake near Ratheim in the center of the Heinsberg district and is located directly on the Rur . It is approximately L-shaped; the greatest width is approx. 800 m, the greatest longitudinal extent approx. 590 m.

The lake and its banks are designated as a landscape protection area.

Emergence

The lake is a quarry pond , created as a result of sand and gravel mining from the late 1960s to the 1980s. In the initial phase it was popularly called "Lago Laprello" (the quarry pond in the Heinsberg district of Lieck is also called Lago Laprello, after the gravel mining company), it then got its official name after Adolf Freiherr Spies von Büllesheim from Ratheim, who joined this Time was a member of the Bundestag for the district of Heinsberg.

In 1973 the lake was leased by the Spies von Büllesheim family to the Ratheim fishing club. At that time the lake had an area of 20 hectares. The bank planting with wood species was carried out on their own initiative by the members of the Ratheim fishing club.

nature

As a result of the activities of the Ratheimer fishing club, the lake is now extremely rich in fish. Pike , perch , eel , carp and many other species of coarse fish can be found here; Giant catfish are also very rarely caught by anglers.

Despite the fish population, a population of pond frogs has established itself in quieter, weedy bank areas . Pond clams can also be found in the lake.

Due to its location directly on the Rur, Lake Adolfo has gained special importance for many water-bound - also rare - migratory bird species that use the water surface and bank areas as resting places. In spring and autumn a large number of ducks ( ducks , geese , swans ) and divers can be observed here.

The Adolfo lake also serves as winter quarters for some bird species. In recent years it has been quite attractive to the almost extinct cormorants in North Rhine-Westphalia , which is said to have had negative consequences for the population of some fish species (especially grayling ) in the lake and in the neighboring Rur.

The steep banks that existed at the lake in the beginning were flattened, breeding occurrences of sand martin and kingfisher have not been found here since then.

Beavers live by the lake and occasionally cut trees.

Recreational use

The good accessibility due to the proximity of the Autobahn 46 makes the Adolfo lake a popular excursion destination with a wide range of possible uses.

  • Fishing : The lake is the home water of the fishing club Ratheim 1934 eV. Foreign visitors can purchase day tickets.
  • Diving : The abundance of fish and the clear water with visibility of approx. 5 m make the lake very attractive for divers. A filling station is available.
  • Sailing : The members of the Ratheim sailing club from 1978 operate a landing stage and are entitled to use the lake for sailing and windsurfing . The bank areas are widely marked with buoys and are not allowed to be driven on.
  • Cycling : The Rurufer cycle path leads right past the bank .
  • Hiking / walking / jogging : The varied landscape of the Rurgraben near Ratheim also makes the area attractive for many walkers and runners.

particularities

  • As the remains of the west wall , four bunkers have been preserved, which were blown up after the Second World War , but - unlike many other bunkers in the region - were not removed. They can be seen as islands in Lake Adolfo.
  • "Injustice stone": erected by a local resident who wanted to mine gravel but had not received a permit
