Genera

The real geese (Anserini) are birds that are listed in the classical system as a tribe within the subfamily of geese (Anserinae) and the family of duck birds (Anatidae). They include the two classic genres of sea goose ( Branta ) and field geese ( Anser ).

The total of fifteen species vary in color between black and white and gray or brown. Males and females are very similar in color. They have a relatively long neck and can run relatively quickly thanks to the medium-length legs that are centrally located below the body.

All fifteen species live in the northern hemisphere.

All real geese show ritualized mating behavior before actually mating . The expulsion of a rival pair of birds is often demonstrated to the outside world by means of a triumphant demonstration. The bond between males and females is mostly lifelong. However, only the female is involved in nest building .

The sister group relationship between the genera Anser and Branta , initially established on the basis of morphological characteristics , has been confirmed several times by phylogenomic investigations based on the comparison of homologous DNA sequences. However, there is no agreement between different studies about the sister group of this clade . However, all results point to the group of swans (Cygnini) or individual taxa from it. In some phylogenies, swan genera such as Cygnus are therefore counted among the Anserini.
