Sally Eilers
Dorothea Sally Eilers (born December 11, 1908 in New York City , † January 5, 1978 in Woodland Hills , California ) was an American actress . Between 1927 and 1950 she starred in a total of almost 70 films, with her career peak in the early 1930s.
life and career
Sally Eilers originally wanted to be a dancer, but then the attractive blonde moved to Hollywood. In 1927, while the movie was still silent, she made her film debut with a small role in The Red Mill alongside Marion Davies . In the same year she was also seen in Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's masterpiece Sunrise - A Song of Two People , where she played a first more notable role as a lady with the constantly falling clothes racks. She was best known for the lead role in the Sennett comedy The Good-Bye Kiss (1928). Also in 1928 she was voted one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars . Eilers made the transition to sound film without any problems and she was considered one of the most wanted actresses in the early 1930s, playing leading roles in B-crime films or comedies. Her appearances on the side of James Dunn in popular films such as Bad Girl (1931), Sailor's Luck (1932) and Arizona to Broadway (1933) were best known . She also took on leading roles in the Charlie Chan crime film Death Is a Black Camel (1931) and starring alongside Spencer Tracy in Quick Millions (1931).
Although the quality of her films soon deteriorated, Eilers remained a popular actress until the late 1930s. In the 1940s she mostly only got supporting roles and made increasingly fewer films. Eilers probably had the most significant role of her late career in Edgar G. Ulmer's film noir Voice from the Beyond (1945), where she got involved in a relationship with her husband's potential murderer. In 1950 she said goodbye to the Hollywood business after nearly 70 films. The actress was married four times: from 1930 to 1933 with western star Hoot Gibson , from 1933 to 1943 with the film producer Harry Joe Brown , from 1943 to 1946 with Howard Barney and from 1949 to 1958 with the director Hollingsworth Morse . All four marriages were divorced and she had a son from her relationship with Harry Joe Brown.
Sally Eilers died of a heart attack in 1978 at the age of 69. She was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale , California .
