Anne Moffat , during her marriage Anne Picking , (born March 30, 1958 ) is a Scottish Labor Party politician .

Life

Moffat attended Woodmill High School . She was a nurse at Lynebank Hospital and is a member of the UNISON union . Two years after their divorce, she resumed her maiden name Moffat . The marriage had two children. In 2009 Moffat married a second time.

Political career

As the union's envoy, Moffat sat on the Labor Party's National Executive Committee between 1994 and 1998 , to which she was a member. After John Home Robertson , who had represented the constituency of East Lothian in the British House of Commons since its introduction in 1983 , did not run for the 2001 general election, the Labor Party set up Picking as his successor. Despite losing votes compared to Robertson's last result, she was able to prevail clearly against her five opponents and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. In the following general election in 2005 it lost 5.7% of its votes, but still received the highest percentage of votes with 41.5%. A few weeks after the election, Picking resumed her maiden name. She chose the timing so that citizens did not have to get used to a new name before the elections.

First of all, Moffat was supposed to defend her mandate in the 2010 general election. As a result of several controversies about her person, the Labor Party decided a few weeks before the elections to no longer appoint Moffat. Instead, Fiona O'Donnell was nominated, who held the mandate. Moffat left the British House of Commons at the end of the term.

Controversy

Picking claimed £ 39,744 in travel expenses in the 2003/2004 twelve month billing cycle. This was the highest figure for any member of parliament. Michael Collie , politician with the Scottish Green Party , requested disclosure of the individual items. This was denied until 2007 when publication was finally ordered. It became known that in addition to flights to Lisbon and Malta , unusually high costs for the train transfer from London Heathrow Airport , which significantly exceeded the highest individual prices for tickets, were set. There were also unusually high costs for flights between London and Edinburgh . Upon release, Moffat's travel expenses dropped to around £ 12,000 for the 2006/2007 accounting period.

After the parliamentary elections in 2007 for the Scottish Parliament , Moffat drew a comparison between the party leader of the SNP and First Minister Alex Salmond and Adolf Hitler . After she was sharply criticized for her statement, Moffat explained that her testimony only aimed at parallels in the electoral system and not at people. For this reason, no apology is necessary.

After efforts to denominate Moffat in 2007 failed due to the rejection of the trade unions, she drew further internal party resentment in the following years. She was accused of failing to fulfill her duties extensively by not attending party events, neglecting her voters and making the smallest number of verbal contributions of all MPs. For these reasons, the party finally withdrew their trust in 2010 and no longer nominated her for the upcoming elections.

Even though Moffat was not yet entitled to a pension after nine years of parliamentary activity, days after her denomination she declared that she would not be able to run in the following elections for health reasons. Since in this case the calculation is based on a parliamentary activity up to the age of 65, this opened up pension entitlements for her.
