Otto Neumann (athlete)

Otto Neumann (born August 28, 1902 in Karlsruhe , † April 12, 1990 in Mannheim ) was a German athlete .

In 1922 and 1924 he became German champion over 400 meters for MTG Mannheim . In 1927 he won the title with the 4 x 400 meter relay (Hübner, Erich Renell , Otto Neumann, Klähn) of the DSC Berlin . In the following year he became German champion over 400 meter hurdles and with the 4 x 400 meter relay (Otto Neumann, Herbert Böcher , Reinhold Schmidt , Hermann Engelhard ) of SC Teutonia 99 Berlin .

Neumann was nominated for the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam . There he was eliminated in the individual over 400 meters in the intermediate run. With the German 4 x 400 meter relay (Otto Neumann, Werner Storz , Richard Krebs , Hermann Engelhard ), however, he won the silver medal with the European best time of 3: 14.8 minutes. With a height of 1.78 m, he had a competition weight of 71 kg.

He was a qualified gymnastics and sports teacher and received his doctorate. At the University of Heidelberg he was an honorary professor for physical exercise. From 1938 to 1940 he coached SV Waldhof Mannheim and reached the cup final with the team in 1939 . In 1952 he initiated the establishment of the basketball department at USC Heidelberg . From 1955 to 1957 he was chairman of the Association of Old Athletes , the association of German champions.

His sons Fritz and Hannes became German basketball champions with the USC men's team.
