Hannes Neumann

Hannes Neumann (born March 26, 1939 - † November 7, 2018 ) was a German national basketball player and coach, handball player and sports scientist .

career

Neumann's mother Maria was a German national basketball player as well as a successful track and field athlete and tennis player, his father Otto was director of the Institute for Physical Exercise at Heidelberg University and founder of the basketball department of USC Heidelberg , which was launched in 1950, a year after the club was launched Life was called.

Neumann won the German championship title in 1956 with the Heidelberger A-Jugend. In 1957 he won the German championship (DM) for the first time with the men's team, and his brother Fritz was one of his teammates. By 1962, Neumann won the DM title six times in a row with the USC, while studying history, English, economic history and sports at the University of Heidelberg.

In 1961 and 1965 Neumann took part in the European Championships with the German national team.

In the 1962/63 season he was not part of the Heidelberg squad due to a study visit to Cornell University in the United States . In 1966 he won his seventh German championship title with the USC and was also German handball runner-up with SG Leutershausen in the same year . In 1967 Neumann completed his doctoral thesis in history.

In February 1968 Neumann took over as the successor to Kurt Siebenhaar,  initially as a player- coach at the USC team. In 1971 he gave up his coaching position in order to take up a professorship for sports science at the Technical University of Braunschweig . In the same year he joined the Bundesliga club MTV Wolfenbüttel , where he worked as a trainer alongside his academic work until 1975. Between 1968 and 1971 Neumann was an instructor on the extended board of the German Basketball Federation .

In 1977 Neumann took up a professorship at the sports science institute of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen with a focus on training science and from 1977/78 took over the coaching position at MTV Giessen , which he promptly led to the German championship title in his first year in office. In 1979, under Neumann, MTV was runner-up and DBB Cup winner. With these successes he ended his activity in the club for the time being, but returned to the coaching office in 1982, which he held until the end of the main round in the 1983/84 season. In 1985/86 Neumann was visiting professor at the Free University of Berlin and at the same time coach of DTV Charlottenburg , which he led to the German runner-up in 1985. After his trip to the capital, Neumann continued his work at the Giessen Institute for Sports Science. He later also became First Vice President of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen.

In the 1993/94 season Neumann was the successor of Hans Brauer for a few months again coach of the MTV Gießen, at the end of January 1994 Neumann resigned from his position after a dispute with the player Doug Roth . In 2000 he brought out the book "Richtig Basketball", in which he presented basic aspects of tactics, technique and training.
