swim
The club and its long history - The origins of swimming at Z88 go back to the 20s and 30s. You swam in the outdoor pool on the Krummen Lanke, later also in the Wannsee lido, in winter in the Stadtbad Steglitz or in the old Schöneberg Stadtbad. The focus was on recreational swimming, swimming training, lifeguarding and taking of sports badges.
Nothing is known of competitions from this period. The group disbanded during World War II. When the Stadtbad Zehlendorf in the Clayallee was completed, the way was clear for a new establishment of the swimming department, which took place on February 15, 1966 in the Ratskeller Zehlendorf. In a very short time a very successful swimming department with around 300 members developed. In 1972 the first open youth swimming festival (the predecessor of today's Z88 SprintCup) took place. With up to 2000 entries, this competition is still an integral part of the events calendar of the Berlin Swimming Association. With numerous successes in the 70s and 80s and especially in recent years on a national and international level, the name Z88 became a seal of quality for swimming in Berlin.
1977 was a good year. As an 18-year-old, Dagmar Gruenbeck won the first Berlin swimming title for Z88 over 100 m breasts. The women's team climbed into the Regionalliga Nord, and Christine Schlaak, who was only 12 at the time, was already making a name for herself as the German year-round champion over 100 m and 200 m backs. Christian Trenner and Andreas Karolyi were - when they were still young - among the top German youth.
Despite excellent individual performances, the Z88 team at that time was too small to be able to celebrate team success over the long term. In an effort to “concentrate the forces”, the swimmers of BSV92, SG Schöneberg and Z88 got together in 1980 exclusively for a joint start in team competitions under the name SGS Berlin. Each club otherwise retained its independence, traveling to club competitions alone.
From now on there was a lot of competitive gold in the title fights. In all teams and relays, Z88 swimmers contributed to championship victories - be it at regional or national level. The SGS women started in the 1st, the men in the 2nd Bundesliga. The outstanding swimmer during this time was Christine Schlaak, who finished fourth in the 1982 world championship in the 4 × 100 m relay in Ecuador. Christine holds 4 club records to date.
In 1986, mainly due to organizational difficulties and a lack of cooperation within the SGS, it was decided to leave the “Startgemeinschaft Swimmingpool Berlin”. Since then, one has tried to assert itself again as a single club in Berlin's swimming life.
An essential guarantee for the numerous successes is the systematic and concentrated promotion of young talent at Z88, in which the Zehlendorf primary schools are an important partner of the swimming department. So went u. a. The German top swimmer Antje Buschschulte , along with many other good swimmers, once emerged from the Z88 classification and promotion system.
After somewhat quieter times at the beginning of the nineties, the old "Z88 spirit" was revived with new, contemporary structures. Modern and efficient training and organizational structures were set up, important traditional values of the club and competitive sports were linked to them, and so a new successful era arose at Z88. The focus of work at Z88 is on competitive sports for talented children, young people and adult athletes. The range of popular and recreational sports is less due to the lack of water.
With the development and promotion of the men's team to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1998, the successful work was crowned for the first time as a team. As one of three Berlin Bundesliga teams, Z88 is the only team that has grown out of its own offspring. True to the motto "You have to be 11 friends", Z88 successfully stayed in the upper house for ten years until 2009. The young women's team from Z88 has been one of the best teams in Berlin for years and made it to the 2nd Bundesliga in December 2009. The men are already working on their comeback.
Successful individual achievements naturally developed from a successful team. In addition to numerous Berlin, North German and German titles, in 1999 Stefan Haß (born 81) won two European Junior Champion titles at the JEM in Moscow - successes like this motivate year after year Year numerous young talented athletes for competitive swimming.
