The MTV Braunschweig (actually: Braunschweiger MTV from 1847 ) is the largest and oldest sports club in Braunschweig .

history

The MTV (Men's Gymnastics Club) Braunschweig was founded in 1847. The association openly acknowledged the goals of the democratic German revolution of 1848/1849 .

On April 22, 1859, the MTV disbanded after it had previously been placed under police supervision like other gymnastics clubs in the reaction era. Almost 19 months later, on December 2, 1860, the association was re-established at the endeavors of Wilhelm Bracke .

In 1888, the MTV Braunschweig was the first North German club to introduce women's gymnastics. In 1891 the first lignite hike took place on the first Sunday in February , and since then it has led every year from the Matthäuskirche in Braunschweig to Königslutter am Elm . Since 1977, hikers have been returning to Bornum am Elm after 25 kilometers . In 1900 the association became a registered association. In 1938 the sports organization was taken over by the NSDAP .

In October 1945, the MTV was again approved as a sports club. In 1964, the Kennel Sports Park was inaugurated, in which almost all exercise groups who conduct training and competitions outside of closed buildings trained. In 1993 the association had over 6000 members for the first time. On August 1, 2012, the MTV left the Kennel Sports Park and moved to the Rote Wiese Sports Park . Football and hockey pitches are located on the sports facility of the Braunschweig West Park .

Current

The MTV Braunschweig currently has over 6000 members. Since 1987, the MTV has organized the Braunschweiger Nachtlauf annually , which runs through the closed Braunschweig city center in June .

Soccer

The football department of MTV was particularly successful in the period immediately after the end of World War II. In 1945 the former first division club Leu Braunschweig was absorbed by MTV; from 1948 to 1954 one then played in the then second-class state or (from 1949) amateur upper league Lower Saxony , until the SC Leu was re-established at the end of the 1953/54 season and took over the starting place of the MTV in the league. In the years that followed, the MTV football team mostly played in lower-class amateur football.

Handball

The handball department of MTV was founded in 1923. In 1982 MTV entered into a syndicate with PSV Braunschweig . In 1985 the men's team rose to the Regionalliga Nord for the first time . The following season 1988/89 they finished penultimate and had to relegate after only two seasons in the 2nd Bundesliga. After a season in the regional league, they rose in 1990 to the league. It wasn't until 2002 that you could get promoted back to the regional league and play there until 2006 . After the club had meanwhile been relegated to the association league, it was promoted back to the Lower Saxony Oberliga in the 2014/15 season . There, MTV was able to win the championship straight away in the 2015/16 season and thus made it through to the third division . In the 2016/17 season , MTV secured relegation three game days before the end of the season. From the 2019/20 season, the team will be back in the major league.

Overall, the MTV played for 16 years in the Lower Saxony Oberliga. This puts you in 5th place in the all-time ranking.
