Friedrich August Wilhelm Theodor Hermann (born September 14, 1835 in apprenticeship ; † February 20, 1906 in Braunschweig ) was a German teacher, gymnastics inspector and Low German poet . He led together with Konrad Koch in 1874, the football game in Germany and founded in 1896 in the style of basketball , the basketball game .

Life

August Hermann grew up as an apprentice near Braunschweig and became a teacher. During his preparation time in Wolfenbüttel he got to know the gymnastics community of the large school and became an enthusiastic gymnast. In Dresden , the middle school teacher August Hermann completed additional training as a gymnastics teacher . He initially gave gymnastics lessons at several private schools and was involved in the Braunschweig men's gymnastics club . In addition, he built a gymnastics organization beyond Braunschweig's borders.

Initiatives for gymnastics

With his work “On the Necessity of Physical Exercise” in 1862 he tried to win over broad sections of the population for gymnastics. In 1869, August Hermann became a teacher at the Martino-Katharineum grammar school , after having been teaching volunteers since 1864. In 1873 Hermann founded an "ice rink club". In 1874 he got a soccer ball from England and, together with Konrad Koch, introduced soccer for the first time in Germany at the Martino-Katharineum. In 1875 he initiated the "Sedan competitions" with popular exercises in schools and clubs, an event in which the entire population of the city took part. He invented numerous games and in 1896 introduced a derivation of the basketball game in Germany under the name "Korbball". At the Schlossanstalten in Wolfenbüttel he began training as a gymnastics teacher in 1884. All school gyms in Braunschweig were set up according to his plans.

August Hermann is the "father of gymnastics" in Braunschweig. The teacher, restless and active into old age, was appointed gymnastics inspector in 1887. His efforts were recognized beyond Braunschweig's borders: He was chairman of the 'German Gymnastics Teachers' Association' and was a member of the board of the 'Central Committee for Popular and Youth Games in Germany'. In addition to rulebooks for games, he has also published several books.

For his services to sport in Lower Saxony , he was included in the Lower Saxony Sports Honor Gallery of the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History.

Poet and dialect poet

August Hermann was not only a gymnast, but also a poet and possessed great musical abilities. He discovered his poetic talent early on. The occasional poet wrote poems for children, which were also included in children's primers, as well as festivals and plays for schools and clubs. He often took samples of his humor in good company. In the early nineties, August Hermann published a collection of his Low German poems , which he found in the booklet “Erenst un Snack. En lüttjen Pack ” summarized. It kept appearing in new editions, in 1985 it saw the 12th edition.

Herrmann was also a member of the Harz Club and has climbed the Brocken 75 times. He always contributed to the sociability with his numerous songs.

Friend of Wilhelm Raabe

Together with Wilhelm Raabe he belonged to the "Buerschaft von Kreyenfelde". Here he was accepted as a "Käpelbuer". In 1882, several fathers, including Wilhelm Raabe, founded a "family dance and entertainment club" which they called the "Drei-R-Klub". August Hermann was given the role of amusement master. Wilhelm Raabe and August Herrmann were also members of the “ Feuchter Brush ” artists ' club. Hermann was the bard of the "FP", as the artist club later called itself. His songs appeared in print in 1899. August Hermann was connected with Wilhelm Raabe until the end of his life. From 1898 he was one of the regular guests at Raabe's regulars' table in Herbst's Weinstube. In addition, like Wilhelm Raabe and many other dignitaries of the city, he was a member of the sociable association of honest clothing sellers in Braunschweig .

August Hermann was a well-known and popular personality in the 19th century.
