The 48th German Indoor Athletics Championships took place on February 24th and 25th in the Helmut-Körnig-Halle in Dortmund . For the thirteenth time, Dortmund hosted. On the first day 4,000 spectators came and on the second day the event was sold out.
The competitions were dominated by the World Indoor Championships , which were held two weeks later in Lisbon . Andreas Erm won the 5000 meter track with a new German record. The championships were overshadowed by the case of Dieter Baumann . Baumann had obtained the right to start in Dortmund despite his suspension in court. The World Athletics Association IAAF threatened to ban all athletes who started its run and then suspended all runners so that Jan Fitschen could not take part in the World Indoor Championships.
