The handball department, founded in 1920, won the Hessen championship in 1977 after a playoff against TSG Hofgeismar and was promoted to the then second-class Regionalliga Südwest. In 1981 they qualified as runner-up in the regional league for the new 2nd handball league , in which the team was able to hold out for eleven years. In the first three years the TuS Griesheim was second in the season south and thus qualified for the promotion games to the 1st Bundesliga, but failed each time because of the representative of the northern season (so the TuS is the club that most often played in direct promotion games to the 1st Bundesliga failed without ever having played in the 1st division). Subsequently, the team was regularly found in the midfield of the southern season until 1991. In 1992, after a total of fifteen seasons in the second-highest division, they were relegated to the now third-tier regional league, in which the Griesheimers played for six years until 1998 and then relegated to the two-tier Oberliga Hessen. At the end of the 1999/2000 season, the club, being the penultimate of the southern season, missed qualifying for the single-track Oberliga Hessen and was thus fifth class. It was not until 2014 that he was promoted to the top division again. Between 1977 and 1993, the club took part in the main round of the DHB Cup a total of 14 times , although it was eliminated eleven times in the first round and three times in the second round. In 2017 the team was relegated back to the national league as bottom of the table.
